Photoblog: Petaling Street and Jalan Alor, KL

Hawker food/street food is a big part of Malaysian culture and can be found anywhere in the country. If you are a foreign tourist to KL, don't miss out Petaling Street and Jalan Alor. A tad touristy, the foods are delectable nonetheless.

Here are some pictures snapped at Jalan Alor and Petaling Street during my whirlwind 36 hours in KL.

MangosteenMangosteen--the queen of all fruits--has a milky color flesh which is sweet with just the right tint of sourness.

A friendly street vendor in KL A friendly street vendor with his hot wok. His stir-fried Hokkien Mee is cooked with lots of wok hei (the breath of wok).

A Typical Open-Air Restaurant, Petaling StreetA very colorful and festive open-air restaurant at Petaling Street.

Portuguese Baked Fish Grilled Over FireAnother street vendor watching over his Portuguese baked fish wrapped with aluminum foil.

Claypot Chicken RiceClaypot chicken rice. This is how the the real stuff are done--with two electric fans fanning the charcoal flame.

View the complete set and take a virtual tour of the food scenes in KL...enjoy!

Great photos. Imagine how many more we could have had if you were there longer?? Hope it was good.

I'm surprised the hokkien mee is black (is it fried with sweet sauce or what?). Wow, lucky the covers were still on the claypot...if not, looking at the chicken rice in the claypot would have made me crave. How nice if we could have all these hawker/street food in cooler weather such as in California? :D

PE - too bad I myself didn't have the Portuguese Baked fish because my favorite stall wasn't opened. I am a food snob. :P

Claude - you can go back again. :)

WMW - OK, I will take some pictures of Penang. I posted some here a few months ago.

Ming - when was the last time you are home in Malaysia?

Suane - yeah lah...what we get outside of Malaysia is not the same. Malaysian food is the best. ;)

Mallika - you will have no idea. I am constantly eating when I am home...every waking hour!

Tiga - I think it's darker because of my lousy camera lah...taken at night...but it was quite black, but maybe it's the wok hei?! CA and street food...hmmm...I don't think so. :(

Bake your cake - Ooooh, time to go home and eat your cake too! :P

Team BSG - right on...yes, the next time you guys have to pay back by coming up to Penang. Have you read my Tambun post? La La Chong can fight with it or not?

I wrote a review on the Hokkien Mee not too long ago and has just "reposted" it in my blog here. Great Hokkien Mee!

Hi Bee - we revisited that Portugese fish stall last night for the first time in 4 years. It was a highlight of our first visit to KL but I'm sorry to say that last night's dinner was horrible. Muddied sauces with no real discernible flavors other than 'hot' and - get this - surimi (fake crab) thrown in with our squid and ray! What a bummer. Some things do, unfortunately, change.
