Eating Beijing: Paper
Last night, I had a fantastic set dinner at Paper, a chic restaurant serving modern Chinese cuisine in Beijing. (Paper is owned by my fellow Malaysian Cho, who is also behind the hugely popular and successful Cafe Sambal and Bed Bar in Beijing.) Clockwise from left: fried calamari & fruit salad, cucumber, lotus root, ground pork patty. Soup, grilled cod, jumbo prawn tempuras, egg plant. Pipa tofu, sweet & sour pork, cold noodles, stir-fried veggie and black fungus. My personal favorites: the melt-in-the-mouth grilled cod fish, jumbo prawn tempuras, and the dessert. They were exquisite.![]() At Paper, there is no menu to order from. All you have to do is tell your waiter/waitress what you don't eat. Then just sit back, relax, and enjoy the meal.No hassle, great food--the kind of dining experience I like. Paper 138 Gulou Dongdajie Dongcheng District Beijing, China Tel: 010-84015080 Notes:

Cheers
Claude
Beijing is definitely filled with great food esp when you know people there. Everything looks so good esp the cod.
14-course...look at the spread and quality...wow! I think MW's cucumber-jellyfish salad can fit there (replace the cucumber) :)
Is the grd pork patty, lion head-狮子头 ? Geez, I saw pipa tofu too!
How come the jumbo prawn has patches of "black"? Is it seaweed(nori)?
No menu? Most "私房菜" restaurant and eatery operate like that. Also good right, no need to bother with std.inventory! That day fridge got what, then cook what loh! Can ensure fresh ingredients.
Oh wow...that looks really good, esp the tempura prawns :D God knows, I'm a seaafood fanatic.
Man...this makes my lunch look unappetizing LOL!
Great pics, my dear :)
Amazing, and only USD$20 per head!?! Wonder what they'd charge here in the US.
I agree, that grilled cod looks delicious. How was it flavored?
Wah-lau! 14 course...Look at your pics, can imagine the delight! (by the way, is it my PC or your pics on the third panel didn't load fully?_
omg....i'm so freaking hungry that I'm licking the pics wei.
RM,
Everything looks fabulous. That ground pork patty looks awfully VNese though. ;)
Haha, that is funny that "Paper" does not have paper--menus that is!
oh man!! i envy you, RM! to be able to taste all those good food in beijing! and you are tempting us with those so clear pictures.
Yummy...no need taste, see also know it's good. Lucky lucky you!!!
hehe...
I tot i visited wrong site.
Rasa Malaysia sudah jadi Rasa Beijing?
Paper sounds so interesting. No menu, just tell them wat you want to eat. Hmmm..
Awesome Pictures! I love the concept of no menu.
Kanch
Just catching up with your travels: oh my, how well you have eaten... especially in Malaysia... next, some recipes perhaps??
14-course menu?!!! O_o wow.... they look interesting and yummy! by da way, you've been tagged! :p
Looks great! Not bad value too... although it's definitely worth checking out the all-you-can-eat buffet at lunch time at the Hyatt (about 220 yuan maybe) or in the evening, the one at the Shangri-La for similar dosh. Both have a really great selection of food, although at Beijing prices, it really isn't value for money, although my colleague ate enough dessert to make up for the rest of us.
Still, neither beat a good hot-pot! The Shangri-La buffet does have hot-pot on offer, and it tasted great. But, not having the hot-pot on the your table and dipping the meats and stuff in yourself just ruins the effect, so a real hotpot just has to be done!
I'm going to be seriously jealous, but I still want to see a set of nice photos of a sichuan hotpot, because my photos from a few years back are awful, and I want to be able to show people just how tasty it looks!
I like the no-menu approach. It's like Japanese omikase.
When I go to Beijing, I will definitely try to remember to eat here.
Claude - hey thanks x1000 times. This 14-course menu has inspired me to cook my Rasa Malaysia 14-course...stay tuned...hehe.
Boo - For China, I much prefer the food in Shanghai to tell you the truth. Beijing has a few gems, but Shanghai is a different ball game...I think the food in Shanghai is better than Hong Kong these days.
Tiga - no, they were not Lionhead, just plain ground pork patty. The black thing is nori, yes. I have never been to any private kitchens, but this sure seems like it. :)
Expedited Writer - great, I am a seafood fanatic too! :)
Nate - the cod fish was very lightly flavored, I think just some soy sayce and cooking wine.
Victor - hehe. :P
Wandering Chopsticks - I think every food culture have their interpretation of groud pork patty...LOL. ;)
PE - yeah, it should be called Paper-less. :P
Lucia - yes, I think I am quite lucky in the food department. :)
Precious - yep, all tasted great.
Keropok - LOL...Rasa Beijing or Rasa China will work!
Married To A Desi - It certainly saves a lot of time and hassle. Just get a table and you can start eating. I hate ordering from the menu too because you never know what is good or bad especially if it's a new restaurant.
Stephanie - of course, new recipes will be on the way...I haven't given up cooking...my kitchen is lonely without me. ;)
Meiyen - ooooh, tagged...I will have to check it out.
Michenall - I didn't try the hot pot I wanted to, but when you are traveling alone, it's hard to have a hot pot. I did have a Ma La hot pot when I was in Taipei last year. Suffice it to say, it was even hotter than the Sichuan dishes.
Ming - yes, no menu rocks and omikase rocks too!
wow!
the food looked magnifico!
and to be able to enjoy such dishes without the need of going through the menu was even better. at least it reduced the number of headaches you will get in deciding one tempting dish out of many many delicious dishes.
good recommendation! paper restaurant!
Gosh, all the food make me hungry! So, what food did you tell the waiter that you don't eat? hehe.
looks really great! definitely worth the price.
Huh. Chinese cuisine small plates. Sounds like a great idea.
can't help but to envy how great your food pics look..is there any tips on food photography?
Arisa Go - yes, I hate ordering from menu because I could never decide and ended up ordering only those "safe" dishes (knowing that they will taste good regardless of the restaurant)...this is definitely a good concept.
Kok - I told the waiter that I don't eat red meat, hence I do not have red meat. Easy! Next time I will just say "All seafood!" LOL.
Tekko - yeah, considering the amount of food, I think it's reasonable.
Chubbypanda - yeah, Chinese tapas...good idea. Are you game for a Paper restaurant in the OC? I will be your partner...hehehehe.
MQ - I suck at in-door food photography. As to taking food pictures, I think the key is to set your camera to macro setting, and then do a close-up, don't shake (use glasses as a temporary tripod), take many shots, and lots of sun light please. Then a little photoshop and voila...but I am really an amateur, so don't listen to me completely.

I recently traveled to China to visit my son, who's on a semester abroad there. A friend in Beijing took us to Paper a little more than a week ago. It was fabulous. Nice to see your posting!
never try TAJ Curry house near windmill subang , the food was spoilt during my last 2 visits and has been really bad service. the indians from india are really providing a lacklustre service and they do not bother to be apologetic at all. Refund for food - forget it they are even able to say - CALL LA who u want, write la to STAR papers Who cares"
so pls refrine from eating there . the food was so so before but now its really down hill.
regards
