Food Porn: Ma La Crawfish (麻辣小龙虾)

Ma La Crawfish (麻辣小龙虾)Remember my Sichuan-style crawfish post? Well, here is the real stuff.

To get some of the best ma la xiao long xia/麻辣小龙虾 or numbing and spicy crawfish in Beijing, head over to this restaurant called "Hua Jia Yi Yuan/花家怡园" at the famed Guijie (簋街), a street packed full of neon-lit restaurants and hungry patrons...

I'm so glad you made it to Guijie! It's such a foodie haven, especially if you like to true local experience. That ma la crawfish looks so spicy and so delicious. I'll have to check out your recommendation.

They cook them by the buckets, don't they? I like crawfish but the ma-la factor...hmmmm.....what if I just eat one craw fish and got numbed in my taste buds and can't taste the rest of the 49 crawfish anymore? :P

Happy traveling.

I've had these in Beijing too. They were absolutely great, but a word of warning to anyone wanting to try them.... try and get some gloves to wear while pulling them apart, or failing that, don't rub your eyes, pick your nose, or touch any other sensitive area for the rest of the day!

We had them for lunch one day, then while working in the afternoon, even after washing my hands numerous times, I happened to rub one of my eyes and then couldn't see out of it for the next 10 minutes... then, stupidly, 10 minutes after that, rubbed my other eye, and got the same punishment.

Still, really great dish. Thanks for the memories!

Do not eat these mini lobsters. Known as Paragonimiasis, these mini crustaceans are literally the garbage cleaners in the sewage treatment plants.

The 'dirtier' the water, the fatter these mini lobsters
become.

Their lungs are full of worms and their flesh saturated with poisonous metals.

Unscrupulous merchants somehow found a way to get these marketed to eateries.

Do not order this dish. Pass this to those friends who may want to try these mini 'lobsters'.
