Food Products For Sale on Rasa Malaysia

The following products are currently available for sale on Rasa Malaysia. Products will be shipped out of Penang, Malaysia to ensure the highest (and freshest) quality possible. The following products are personally recommended by me and have been covered on Rasa Malaysia before. I hope you will get to enjoy the essence of Malaysian food, regardless of who you are or where you are. To inquire further, kindly send an email to rasamalaysia@gmail.com or click here.

Nyonya Kuih Pie Tee Mould/Mold
This mould/mold is made of copper and won't rust. 250 grams in weight, this Nyonya cooking utensil makes the cases or shells for Nyonya Kuih Pie Tee.

For the recipe of Nyonya Kuih Pie Tee or "Top Hats," please click here.
For the step-by-step guide to using this Pie Tee mould/mold, please click here. This mould can also be used for dessert fillings.

Roti Jala ("Net Bread") Mould/Mold
This plastic Roti Jala mould/mold makes the popular roti jala, or literally "net bread" that goes perfectly well with Malaysian curry chicken. This special cup-like mould with small holes is filled with the roti jala batter, and then the batter is cooked over a pan.

For the recipe of Roti Jala, please click here. For the video guide on using this mould, please click here.

Instant Curry Paste (Meat & Seafood Available)
This instant curry paste makes the best curry EVER!

Available in two flavors, the meat curry paste makes a killer pot of curry chicken (or beef/mutton). The curry chicken goes especially well with Roti Jala. The seafood curry paste make a mean serving of Malaysian Indian-style fish, shrimp/prawn curry, or combination seafood curry. To see my recipe, please click here.

Bak Kut Teh (肉骨茶)
No instant Bak Kut Teh (Pork Bone Tea Soup) can beat this hand-picked spices and herbs mix, sourced from one of the oldest Chinese herbal shops in Penang, Malaysia.

Other than the superior taste and aroma, the herbs in this Bak Kut Teh packet also deliver Chinese medicinal benefits. For the recipe of Bak Kut Teh, please click here and here.

Other than the above products, you can also request or order your desired products. All you have to do is email me at rasamalaysia@gmail.com and ask. For example: a reader ordered a Malaysian satay burner, and another ordered Kuih Rose (Kuih Loyang) moulds/molds.

Thanks for your support on this food-related services! My niece is totally thrilled to see this little business growing as she is the one actually running this, I am just taking the orders! ;)

Rasa Malaysia Featured in The New Straits Times

Savouring the Taste of Malaysia, The New Straits Times, May 26, 2008Rasa Malaysia was featured in The New Straits Times, one of the two largest English newspapers in Malaysia. To read the article (complete with a giant picture of me sitting on top of the Rasa Malaysia homepage with a "quote" WOW!), please click here. My long-time loyal reader and supporter Toni Xe of KL Makan also kindly captured a picture of the newspaper for me. To read it on print, please click here.

Is it just me or newapaper adds 10 pounds to my face?! I have always thought that I have a melon seed face...well, I guess not! If I ever appear on TV, I am sure it will add 30 pounds, as this woman once claimed.

I only wished that my late mother get to see this article...

Anyway, thanks to Rozana Sani at The New Straits Times for writing up this nice feature. What a great way to start off the week!

Pie Tee Molds For Sale

Nyonya Kuih Pie Tee Molds / (Click here for the NEW step-by-step guide to making Nyonya Kuih Pie Tee and new recipe.)
Can I buy Pie Tee molds from you?

I get this question a lot.

Since I posted the recipe for Nyonya Kuih Pie Tee or "Top Hats," I have been receiving emails from readers all over the world about Pie Tee molds. Great news! Penang Nyonya Kuih Pie Tee molds are now available for sale on Rasa Malaysia and you can buy it online from me.

For those who are not familiar with this mold, let's just say that it's a metal wonder (it's made of copper so it won't rust) that churns out crispy cases that hold savory fillings of shredded jicama with shrimp and more. The little munchies produced are called "Nyonya Kuih Pie Tee" or "Top Hats." For the filling, you can pretty much have anything you like, as long as they taste good. When I was staying at Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, I tasted a Kuih Pie Tee that was filled with tangy manga salad. It was unconventional but delicious.

If you are interested in making some Nyonya Kuih Pie Tee to wow your guests this summer, or wishes to expand your culinary repertoire, please email me directly to inquire further...

Thanks very much!

P.S.: It's time I update my Kuih Pie Tee recipe, so please stay tuned.
P.P.S.: I wanted to thank everyone for your kind comments on my last post. You gave me strength to continue my Rasa Malaysia journey, and Rasa Malaysia will continue to reflect the cooking skills that I'd learned from my mother. Thanks again.

Mother's Day

My beloved mother passed away on 5/5/08 at 9:30 am. I was home in Penang attending her funeral.

This morning, my family and I spent Mother's Day picking up her cremated remains...it's the 7th day since her demise (头七).

Dearest mother--I wanted to let you know that everyone in the family loves you very very much and that we will always miss you sorely.

New York Times

I am still on the cruise, on the way back. I received lots of emails from many of you about the article. Thanks for the news!

Thanks to the 75 cents per minute charge, I can't afford to find the article...not to mention the snail-crawling speed.

Here is the link: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/05/dining/05glute.html

Thanks the editor for interviewing me and thanks all for visiting my blog!

Shopping Alert: Canon Digital Rebel XT Camera

Shopping Alert: Canon Digital Rebel XT CameraI don't usually do this, but there are a couple of good deals at Amazon I wanted you guys to know.

Canon Digital Rebel XT (body only) is now on sale at Amazon for only $399.99. That's a steal considering the quality of shots produced by this camera. I shoot all my pictures--food, travel, and people photography--with this camera and I take it with me whenever I travel. I just love it.

What about the lens, you ask? I use Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens, which is priced at $86.48 at the moment.

If you want, you can also buy this camera with its kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6) for $469.99. That's even cheaper than the body and the 50mm macro lens combined, and you will have exactly what I originally bought. However, the kit lens is just OK for food photograhy so I hardly use it.

If you have been waiting to invest in an entry-level DSLR camera, now it's the time. Shipping is FREE at Amazon, so head over there and buy now!

To see samples of my photography, check out the following (all pictures were shot with Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens)...

(Re)Introducing ForeverBee and A Message to My Readers

ForeverBee--Travel. Guides. Photography. Fun.I have resurrected ForeverBee.com, my other website. It has a new purpose and will be updated frequently now. (I promise because I have so much more to share--and offer--other than recipes and food photography.) Think travel & leisure, think travel photography, insider guides to exotic places, and random fun stuff.

If you like Rasa Malaysia, you will probably appreciate my work there, too.

What are you waiting for? Hop over there now and check it out.

Thank a bunch!

(Continue reading my personal message after the jump...)

A Small Message to My Readers:

I am sure you have noticed, I have started a new photo album format on Rasa Malaysia. I have dropped the uber-cool Lightbox 2.0 Photo Album Slide Show in favor of a plain--and ad-supported--photo album due to certain commitments to the kind sponsors of Rasa Malaysia. (Well, someone has got to pay for those Baja lobsters, Nobu Miso Cod, and those US$40/pound Dragon Well "Longjing" Tea, right?). *wink*

That being said, you can continue to enjoy my food photography, albeit via a slightly different delivery method. Please take note that the new format doesn't do the fancy Lightbox 2.0 stuff that you are accustomed to; to view the complete size of a vertical image, just simply click on it and it will load the picture in its orignal size, shape, and form.

No fuss. Easy. Really.

Again, I appreciate your continuous support and kind understanding of this matter. :)

XOXO,
Rasa Malaysia

Menu for Hope 4: Call for West Coast Prizes

Menu for Hope 2007I have an annoucement to make, one that is of great cause; this year, I will be the West Coast host for Menu for Hope, an annual fund raising event organized by Chez Pim. Last year, Menu for Hope raised a whopping $62,925.12 for the United Nations World Food Programme and this year, we are working with them again. Collectively with Chez Pim, all the regional hosts, and you, I hope to make this year's Menu for Hope a bigger success.

So what does it mean for you? It's really simple. If you're a west coast blogger and would like to participate, just follow the steps below:

1. Think of a cool prize that you wanted to donate--a prize that would generate, say, at least 20 bids. (The more bids we get, the more money we raise.) The prize can be food related or non-food related, but must be appealing enough to drive donation and bids. There is no limit to the number of prizes you donate, but it's about quality, not quantity.

2. After you decide on your prize, please send an email to bylow919@gmail.com with the following information:
  • Your name
  • The name and address of your blog
  • The pictures of the prize, in both 250x250 px. and 100x100 px.
  • Brief descriptions of your prize
3. After you send me the above information, I shall provide you with the prize codes of your prizes.

4. The deadline for prize submission is December 7, Friday. So, please send me your entries before Friday.

5. Menu for Hope 4 will kick off officially on December 10, Monday. Please announce your prizes on your blog with the prize codes and encourage your readers to donate and bid for them. I shall also write a big post listing all west coast prizes.

If you live outside of US West Coast and would like to participate, please contact the following regional hosts:

United Kingdom: Johanna of The Passionate Cook and Jeanne of Cooksister
Europe: Fanny of Food Beam
US Central: Kalyn of Kalyn's Kitchen
US East Coast: Adam Kuban of Slice NY and Serious Eats
Canada: Jennifer of The Domestic Goddess
Asia Pacific, Australia, New Zealand: Helen of Grab Your Fork

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me.

Featured: The New Sabah Times

I am blogging from Taipei, but I wanted to share a BIG news with you. I was featured in The New Sabah Times on November 3rd in an article entitled "The Paragons of Food" by the ever so friendly and patient Shan Sandhu. (For your information, I did an email interview with Shan a few months ago but had been bugging non-stop for the publication date of the article!).

There is a HUGE picture of me and two of my food pictures. My fellow food buddies Robyn and Dave of Eating Asia (click here to read Robyn's post about our recent eating escapades in Penang) and Terri of A Daily Obsession were also featured (click here for her post). W00t!

I have never been to Sabah (a Malaysian state in Borneo), but the warmth and love showered by The New Sabah Times and all my Sabahan readers have firmly convinced me to visit The Land Beneath the Wind the next time I go home to Malaysia...

I am wearing a big smile on my face while typing this post--MY FACE IS ON THE NEWSPAPER for the second time! The first time was when I was 16 and passed my SRP (Malaysian high school national exam/equivalent to PMR) with flying colors, but I reckon this time I didn't have to burn midnight oil or study hard...*wink*

Now, who wants to join me for a culinary tour to Sabah (and Penang, of course)? I will guarantee that you will be able to savor Malaysian food ala Eating Asia's experience if you are with me. Drop me a comment or email.

Malaysian Butter Prawns on TV and DMBLGiT First Place Winner!

Malaysian Butter PrawnsThanks to my dearest food bud Jaden at Steamy Kitchen, my famous delicious Butter Prawns dish made its TV debut, live on Tampa Bay's ABC 7 yesterday! Please click here for Jaden's post and here for the video clip.

I would like to say "thank you" to everyone who has voted for me. You know who you are and you are a star!

And of course, I have to thank the author of Authentic Recipes from Malaysia for the recipe (which I adapted). If you want to learn more about Malaysian cooking, this is a great cookbook for Malaysian cuisine.

I think it's time Malaysian food gets its much deserved recognition in the United States and hopefully it will become a popular cuisine j
